National Highways is a government-owned company charged with operating, maintaining and improving England’s motorways and major A roads. The organisation holds a vast amount of data in relation to England’s road network, spread over multiple systems. This data is geo-located, either represented as a point on a map or as a complex array of polygons, often intersecting and overlaying one another. Xerini were tasked with bringing this data (over 3 million data instances) onto a map, for the first time, using an intuitive and performant user interface. The many advantages of visualising all of the data in one place, such as being able to view detailed renderings of the road surfaces, overlaid with detailed schematics of the drainage network along with flood-risk data has been a game changer for National Highways.
